Apple blew everyone out of the water today, with the unexpected iPhone announcement piggybacking on the official, very expected, Apple TV. After two years of rumors about an Apple Cell Phone, a widescreen iPod, and a few here and there about the return of the old Newton, Steve Jobs took the stage in San Fran today and spent approximately an hour hyping up the new device that combines all those functions.
While the phone doesn't really bring that many new must-have features to the table when compared to, say, a Windows Smartphone, it easily jumps to the head of the pack if it can do everything Jobs said it can do (just like the iPod did with the MP3 player market). If they enjoy the amount of success they've had with the iPod, it will make the iPhone a formidable opponent in a field that has not had to field top-quality hardware or software since, well, forever.
To start off their 31st year, the company showed it's commitment to their new cell phone and home theater line by changing it's name from Apple Computers to Apple, Inc. It will be very interesting to see what happens now that this innovative company has expanded beyond being just another desktop computer manufacturer.

iphone is probably a bad call on apples part(yay puns!). Not because it's a bad idea, only because they are really limiting their market to gangsters who can afford to buy a $600 phone knowing the damage that could, and often does, befall a phone. Plus with only 8 gigs of space, that limits the amount of music and video that can live on the iphone.
If Steve was thinking, they would have released a 80 gig ipod, with sparkly new touch screen, and also a phone which would have price points around 300 bucks. The newer ipod could be priced around $400. This would show how cool the new stuff is (since we all base coolness on price and if its shinny) but not completely box out those interested in the iphone, but who would not want to chance loosing a $600 status symbol. Maybe diddy will like it though, but personally, icould care less.
I think right now they're just trying to compete with all the Windows Smartphones and Blackberries that are currently out there. Once this phone starts to do well with the rich kid crowd, you're going to see offshoot models that are less expensive. They're already talking about it on the Mac rumors sites.
Once the iPod was successful, it didn't take long for them to come out with the Mini, the Nano, and the Shuffle, right?
In the future apple will release the IRotary, a nonportable phone with no touchpad, just a dial that spins to select numbers. It will be sparked by demand for a device that makes a damn phone call.
